National Science Week 2021

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running from the 12- 22 of August this year, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums, and science centres.

This years National Science Week theme is Food: Different by Design which covers a broad range of areas in food production and sustainable agriculture. This theme encourages children to explore topics such as biosecurity, food technology and laboratory-developed foods.

Whether you are interested in the theme or love other aspects of science, there are so many ways you and your little one can learn about science through hands on activities.

Read and Learn

We have included some of our favourite science related reads in here. A good story can help engage a child in a topic they might steer away from in a different format. If you read any of these, let us know what you think!

Don’t forget to follow us on social media to see some fun experiments to try out at school or at home! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you to Dymocks Children’s Charities for donating these terrific books to our resource library for volunteers to borrow.

Australia’s Wild Weird Wonderful Weather: For the young and old, complete with detailed illustrations and bite sized fun facts, this powerful book introduces readers to the challenges of a warming planet and encourages them to be mindful of impact their actions have on the environment.
Amazing Australian’s and their Flying Machines: Imagine how tricky it was to travel in a time when airplanes didn’t exist? This book tells the stories of ten brave Australians who took to the skies and changed the face of aviation forever.
A Walk in the Bush: A story that explores the wonders of nature, and enjoying special moments with the ones we love. Think singing birds, wallaby’s, caterpillars and a touch of humour. Take a literacy deep dive into the great outdoors!
