Numeracy Resource Page

Numeracy

Welcome, we hope you find inspiration, ideas and most of all, the joy of learning mathematics in the activities on our numeracy pages.

Our aim is to make it fun for children to learn maths. Please remember that the most important part of your placement is the positive relationship you have with your child

As you may remember of training, The Pyjama Foundation recommends a special way of teaching new concepts in maths. That is:

  1. See a need for maths: Use Games/Directed play/activities with counters, blocks paddle pop sticks etc. Beating you at a game is the best reason for a child to learn a new skill.
  2. Talk about the activities. Use these activities and games to develop the mathematical language used in the new maths concept being learnt.
  3. Symbols. finally introduce the symbols and conventional process of computing for the maths you have been doing in the activities. e.g. 234 + 389 = 623.

This series of videos will explore this approach further, and go through in detail how to teach each specific concept when working with a child in our program:

NUMERATION

Numeration is concerned with understanding numbers and their properties. Understanding how the number system works underpins many of the uses of mathematics in everyday life and establishes many of the thinking patterns on which mathematics relies, (Booker 2014).
