Reading is Magic: 5 Engaging Book Week Activities for Kids

21 Aug 2024
Book Week is upon us, and this year's theme is "Reading is Magic!". Get ready to see both children and adults dressed as their favorite characters all week long as we celebrate the joy of reading.

From brain development and social skills, to memory and imagination, reading has so many benefits!

At The Pyjama Foundation, the magic of reading is something we hold dear, so we’ve put together some creative ideas to help you celebrate books this year.

Reading Bingo

Reading is already a blast, but why not make it even more exciting with a friendly challenge? Test your reading limits and join in on Book Week Bingo. If you’re playing with younger participants, aim to complete one row, but for those who are up for a bigger challenge, try to check off every box!

Draw one of your Favourite Scenes!

Let the little ones' imaginations soar by having them illustrate a favourite scene from one of their favourite books. With crayons, markers, watercolours, or any art supplies you have on hand, encourage them to bring their favourite moments to life!

Dress Up

Many schools and childcare centres will be hosting a 'Book Week Parade,' where children can dress up as their favourite characters. Dressing up not only brings the joy and magic of reading to life but also combines with one of our other favourite activities: crafting! If the schools in your life aren't holding a Book Week dress-up day, we encourage you to organise your own dress-up party at home.

Reading Pillow Fort

Turn any day into a magical adventure by creating the coziest pillow fort for reading. Gather your favorite blankets and cushions, get comfy, and immerse yourself in a good book in your very own hideaway. Don’t forget to print and attach the sign below to your fort door!
